With the spearheading of Information Technology Department,
Government of Bihar in collaboration with NIC, Bihar geographic information based
platform “iBhugol” was established in 2011 in state. It heralds the beginning of
collaborative process to facilitate data based location specific decision making
through the use of GIS technology in the state of Bihar. It was challenging task
as maps existed in multiple scale, projections, datum, format (digital or hard copy)
etc. These datasets were not available in a form that can be integrated with IT
applications. iBhugol is the first GIS based system in the country that provides
data up to a scale of 1:4000.
In the mitigation to
fulfill the objectives of Digital India to establish end-to-end geospatial electronics
delivery systems, GIS platform established by NIC, Meity, using iBhugol services
has been revamped as “Bihar maps”. This depicts core foundation data as “iBhugol”,
an integrated multi-scale multi-resolution base map service using reference data
from Survey of India, ISRO, FSI and so on. This covers a large number of vector
layers containing administrative boundaries, transport layers such as roads and
railways, forest layers, settlement locations etc. including many base map services
